Michael Gould

PsyD, Owner and Founder, Whisper Landscape Maintenance, Inc.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist who finds time spent in the garden – whether it be pruning roses, planting vegetables, or enjoying an outdoor meal – to rank highly among life’s most simple and profound pleasures. My love of gardening and the great outdoors is, without question, a ubiquitous human experience, as evidenced by the great individual and collective efforts we put into the cultivation and maintenance of our surrounding landscapes. Unfortunately, having attended school, worked and lived in various parts of Southern California for the better part of 20 years, I have born witness to the fundamental irony associated with conventional garden maintenance services: these typical “mow and blow” operations at once beautify commercial and residential gardens, while at the same time pollute the environment with ear-piercing noise, lung-choking power tools and the inappropriate use of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.

Determined not to engage in such senseless behavior, in 2002 I made the conscious decision to maintain my home garden with all-electric appliances rather than gas-powered ones (incidentally, these appliances work fabulously well!) Following the recent birth of my daughter, however, it became abundantly clear something needed to be done to help others modify their behaviors in this regard. Specifically, on neighborhood strolls, we often must repeatedly cross the street in order to avoid the noise, dust and toxic smoke from gas-powered lawn mowers and leaf blowers. Furthermore, my daughter often can’t take a nap without being awoken by these noisy appliances – even if they are being used several houses away. Lastly, the air, soil and water pollution resulting from these power tools and the use of toxic herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers damages the Earth for countless years to come. Whisper Landscape Maintenance is the culmination of efforts from the highly talented and skilled individuals listed on this site. Our shared goal is to promote the health and beauty of our neighborhood landscapes and gardens in a manner that is both earth conscious and community kind.
